Dolomites
For many people the Dolomites have always been the "most beautiful mountains in the world". Now UNESCO has also granted them recognition as a World Heritage Site. The council of the world heritage organisation UNESCO unanimously declared the Dolomites a World Heritage Site on 26 June 2009 and thus gave the natural environment the highest possible global recognition.
Latemar, the whole of Rosengarten and Bletterbach gorge alongside Monte Corno, Puez Odle, Sciliar-Catinaccio, Fanes, Sennes, Dolomiti di Braies, Dolomiti di Sesto and Tres Cime were all included in the list of World Heritage Sites. The core areas that were declared World Heritage Sites cover 135,000 hectares. The key to recognition by UNESCO was the unique, monumental beauty of the area and the unique geology.
